2 Reasons Not To Repair Your Own Roof

If your roof requires repair, you should book a roofer to fix it. Here are two reasons why you shouldn't consider repairing it yourself.

Your attempt to do the roof repair work is unlikely to be effective

The main reason you book a roofer to do the roof repairs is that your own attempts to do this task probably won't be very effective. For example, if some of the roof tiles are broken and you have never done a tile replacement before, there's a good chance that you might not lay the tiles correctly. This could lead to the tiles falling off when it next gets windy or could lead to the tiles not being watertight.

The former could result in the tiles flying off and hitting someone nearby on the head, while the latter could lead to your home interior sustaining water damage. Furthermore, if your home does get damaged due to your inexpert repair of the roof, you might not be able to use your home insurance to pay for any related repair expenses due to you not having had a professional do the roof repairs. If however, a roofer does the repairs, the repair work will be done to a high standard and so will not lead to any additional expenses or other incidents.

You could hurt yourself while trying to do the roof repairs

Another important reason to leave this task to a roofer is that you could hurt yourself while trying to repair your roof. Roofers have a lot of commercial access equipment, including mobile scaffolds and scissor lifts. This makes it much easier for them to work at heights without falling, as these pieces of equipment have guard rails and are extremely stable. In addition to this, experienced roofers are aware of the risks that come with, for example, repairing a leaking roof that's 20 feet off the ground and so will know the best ways to position themselves to avoid falling. Lastly, they also usually wear safety gear (such as a hard hat) to further protect themselves.

In contrast, if the only access equipment you have is an old ladder, plus you have no idea how to safely position yourself once you're up on the roof and need to stay stable while simultaneously using your hands to hold your tools and do the repairs, the chance of you falling and hurting yourself will be high.
